Top 5 Photographers in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan offers photographers a wide range of subjects within a single country. In Baku, the Old City, a walled town of narrow stone lanes listed by UNESCO, rises towards the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshah's Palace. In contrast, the Flame Towers and the curved white lines of the Heydar Aliyev Centre demonstrate how far the capital has come. In the evening, the Caspian boulevard is filled with soft light, and the country's nickname, the Land of Fire, feels very fitting when the towers light up after dark.

Beyond the capital, the scenery continues to change. The rock art and mud volcanoes of Gobustan are a short drive away, the foothills of the Caucasus around Sheki and Gabala offer forests and valleys, as well as the stained-glass windows of the Sheki Khan's Palace, and further north, the Shahdag mountains provide snowy peaks and expansive skies. Here, a couple can move from medieval stone to modern glass to open mountain air within a day, which makes the choice of photographer more important than usual.

The five photographers on this list interpret that setting in very different ways. One builds luxury and cinematic imagery around natural emotion; another leans towards classic storytelling; a third towards fashion-led editorial frames. One captures laughter and tears as they happen, while the last one creates love stories against the backdrop of the Baku skyline. Together, they capture most of what couples look for in Azerbaijan: elegance, energy, restraint, and atmosphere.

Javid Salehbayli

Based in Baku, Javid Salehbayli has been passionate about photography since 2011. He has worked professionally as a wedding photographer since 2014, covering around 25 to 30 weddings a year. He describes his style like this: "My style is a blend of fine art, luxury and cinematic photography. I focus on natural emotions, elegant composition and beautiful light, creating images that feel both sophisticated and authentic. I aim to capture not only how a wedding looks, but how it feels."

His approach is built on paying close attention to each couple: "I prefer to keep my schedule intentionally limited so I can give each couple enough attention and maintain a high level of quality and personal service throughout the entire process." Javid's advice for the wedding day itself is reassuring: "You don't need to know how to pose - I will guide you when needed. The most beautiful photographs usually come from genuine emotions and moments that happen naturally." He is open to destination work and cites Italy as a favourite location: "the combination of architecture, landscapes, history and elegant atmosphere fits very naturally with my photography style."

Nurlan Piriyev

Nurlan Piriyev captures the unfolding of a wedding day: a composed portrait of the couple, a candid glance across the room, and then back to the frame. Based in Baku and ten years into his business, he focuses on wedding and portrait photography, with the occasional event shoot, and moves easily between planned series and reportage.

His galleries have a consistent look. His colours remain natural, with moderate contrast and a warm palette, and he often uses natural and soft artificial light to add depth to faces and fabrics. The mood is elegant and ceremonial, remaining true to the traditions of the day, and a Nurlan Piriyev gallery reads like a classic wedding album.

Ebulfez Zulfuqarov

Open the Ebulfez Zulfuqarov gallery and the first impression is of a magazine spread. Based in Baku, Ebulfez Zulfuqarov has spent ten years in business, specialising in premium weddings, love stories and individual portraits. His work is characterised by deliberate poses, strong symmetry and a sense of movement, in a distinctly fashion-led style.

The look is bold. Colours are deep and saturated, whites and blacks are clean and crisp, and highlights and hard shadows give the light real drama. Zulfuqarov Photo likes architectural settings, striking dresses and close-ups of details, giving the work a luxurious, editorial finish.

İlkin Ceferov

If there is one photographer who captures the moments between the poses, it is undoubtedly İlkin Ceferov. Based in Baku and ten years into his business, he covers weddings, reportage and family and individual sessions. His eye is drawn to the laughter, tears of joy and sudden bursts of energy that bring celebrations to life.

Although posed portraits still have their place in his galleries, the tone is set by soft, warm colour and natural light. İlkin Ceferov's editing is restrained, without heavy stylisation or harsh contrast, giving his images a timeless quality. The atmosphere of the event and the bond between the people in it are what stay with you.

Kanan Jally

Kanan Jally likes to take a step back and let the setting speak for itself. Based in Baku, he works in a contemporary fine-art style, photographing weddings, love stories and portraits. He often uses wide frames, placing the couple within a landscape or the architecture of the city, making them appear small.

Light and shadow form the basis of his work. The colour grading is cinematic, using soft pastels or deeper, moodier tones, and although the composition is carefully planned, the frames look relaxed and natural. Kanan Jally's images have a romantic, refined, film-like quality, which suits couples who want their story told on a larger canvas.

Five photographers, five different instincts and one setting that inspires them all. Javid Salehbayli's approach is luxurious and cinematic; Nurlan Piriyev's is classic and story-driven; Ebulfez Zulfuqarov's is editorial and polished; İlkin Ceferov's is unscripted and warm; and Kanan Jally's is fine art and romantic. Each photographer treats the same country in a different way. Some work with formality and tradition, while others work with movement, laughter, and fine-art atmosphere. However, all of them keep the people at the centre of the frame.

This variety is useful when planning a wedding in Azerbaijan because the country offers so many contrasting backdrops, ranging from the Old City to the Caspian waterfront and the mountains beyond Baku. The easiest way to decide is to look through each photographer's portfolio and check which mood feels most like you. If Azerbaijan is on your list of destinations, Wezoree is a good place to continue your search.
