Some proposals go exactly to plan. Then there are the ones that become stories — the kind that people retell for years. These aren't stories about perfection; they're stories about authenticity. The five couples below got engaged in five completely different places and circumstances. What they have in common is that their moment was unmistakably and irreplaceably theirs.

Asal & Shayan — Mykonos, Greece
Shayan had been planning for months. Asal had no idea. And that gap — between what she thought the evening was and what it actually was — is exactly what made it unforgettable.
They had always loved travelling, celebrating and being surrounded by their loved ones. A year before they got engaged, they visited Mykonos together, and they never forgot the trip. So, when planning a two-week trip through the south of France, Mallorca and Greece, returning to Mykonos felt like a natural choice. What Asal didn't know was that Shayan had been planning something for months.
Through a mutual friend named Riccardo, who worked in Mykonos during the season, Shayan had orchestrated everything. The cover story was simple: a villa party with an all-white dress code.
Asal says. What she didn't know was that their closest friends and family had already arrived and were hidden inside the villa, watching from the balcony.
Shayan led Asal down to a secluded spot overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by flowers. He proposed. Then he smiled and said he had one more surprise, pointing towards the villa. Suddenly, everyone appeared on the balcony, cheering.
The night turned into the kind of celebration they had always dreamed of: a private chef, a DJ, a bartender and all their favourite people in one place. At some point, everyone jumped into the pool. They changed again and danced until sunrise. The next day, the celebrations continued at Spilia Seaside Restaurant and Alemagou Beach Club — because, for Asal and Shayan, one night was never going to be enough.
Karen & Joey — Lake Como, Italy
What started as a family trip to celebrate a graduation turned into an unforgettable experience for all of them.
Karen and Joey flew to Paris for the graduation, then travelled with her parents to Italy and ended up at the Relais Villa Vittoria, a lakeside hotel on Lake Como where, as Karen says, every detail felt like something from a film. That afternoon, Joey suggested taking a private boat ride on the lake. He knew how much she loved capturing beautiful moments. It felt simple and intimate, just the two of them drifting across the water.
Then, in the middle of the lake, another boat appeared. At first, it seemed insignificant. Then Karen began to recognise faces:
Joey's parents and sister. Her own parents and sister. Her childhood best friend, who had travelled across Italy to be there. There was also a close friend who had flown in from Doha for just 24 hours. Joey's best friend had come from Amsterdam. They had all travelled from different parts of the world and coordinated their arrivals so that they would all be on that boat at that exact moment.
Karen recalls.
And at that moment, Joey got down on one knee.
Later that evening, an elegant candlelit dinner was waiting for them back at the villa. What had initially felt like a simple day had become something else entirely.
Tierra & Matthew — At Home, United States
Proposals don't always happen in far-flung destinations. Sometimes the most meaningful ones happen closest to home.
While decorating their house together, Tierra mentioned to Matthew that she would love some formal portraits of them — something timeless that they could frame and display in their home. Matthew agreed and arranged a photoshoot. For Tierra, it was about capturing a moment in time. She focused on the details on the day: their look, the setting, and how everything would come together.
What she didn't realise was that Matthew had already reimagined the moment entirely.
During the shoot, in a way that felt effortless yet deeply intentional, he got down on one knee.
says Tierra. “Every conversation, every prayer, every step we had taken together had led to that exact moment.”
She said yes, and the photographs they had planned to hang on their walls now have a meaning that neither of them could have anticipated. They are not just portraits. They mark the beginning of their forever.
Natália & Adrián — New York City, United States
This one started with a birthday gift. It took an unexpected detour. And it ended exactly where it was always meant to.
For Natália's birthday, Adrián gave her plane tickets to New York — her dream destination, especially at Christmas. They flew just before the holidays, with every day carefully planned and all their favourite places mapped out. However, shortly after arriving, Adrián came down with a high fever and had to stay in the hotel room.
Natália explored the city with friends while he recovered. Once he was well enough to go out, they rearranged their plans so that he could still see the places he had been looking forward to visiting. One of those places was the Brooklyn Bridge.
What Adrián knew — and what Natália didn't — was that she had once shown him a photo of a proposal at a Brooklyn viewpoint and told him how beautiful it was.
He remembered.
Standing on that viewpoint, with the bridge behind them, he proposed.
says Natália. A fever, a rearranged itinerary and a detail quietly stored away — somehow, it all led to the perfect moment.
Alexandra & Cameron — Paris, France
This proposal had been in plain sight for days, yet it still came as a complete surprise.
Cameron had flown to Paris to watch Alexandra, a Company Artist with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, perform the lead role in The Firebird at the Palais des Congrès. It was a historic occasion: the company's first return to France in 40 years. Alexandra's parents had travelled from Washington, D.C. Cameron's sister had flown in from Hawaii and his mother from Arkansas. More than 100 friends and family members were in attendance. By any measure, it was already an extraordinary few days.
Cameron had planned carefully. “I told her we needed photos at the Eiffel Tower,” he recalls. “Being the true fashionista that she is, she asked what I planned to wear. I told her that I was ready to up my game — she shouldn't be surprised when she saw me in three-piece suits. That was my way of flying under the radar.”
On the morning of 1 March, after two performances and a celebratory gala, he asked Alexandra to get up early for photos near the tower. As they stood together in the quiet of the morning, Cameron began to reminisce about when they had first met in Nashville. “I told her she had a glow, and I still feel that glow today,” he says.
Alexandra had briefly wondered whether a proposal might happen in Paris. 'But after two high-pressure performances, a gala and with so much family around, I thought it would happen in front of everyone,' she says.
Cameron got down on one knee. Alexandra leaned down to kiss him and said yes.
Each of these proposals is different. There are different countries, different logistics and different levels of elaborate planning. What they all have in common is something simpler: two people who knew each other and a moment that finally made it official. If you have a story like this, we'd love to hear it! Share it with us through this form and it might give someone else the belief they need.
