There is something about a wedding in Italy that feels almost cinematic by nature — the light, the movement, the quiet elegance of the surroundings. For Carlo Zanetti, however, the real story is never just the setting. It is the feeling behind it. “I create destination wedding films in Italy for international couples who want something cinematic but still real and emotional.”
From the beginning, his approach has been clear — not to stage, but to observe.
Together with his wife Cristina, a photographer and content creator, the work becomes something even more fluid — almost invisible. “We document weddings in a very fluid and discreet way, almost like invisible guests.”
Since 2015, Carlo has been documenting weddings across Italy, gradually refining a style that feels both cinematic and deeply human. Over the years, the focus has shifted further from staging toward authenticity. “Each season has helped me refine my style, focusing more and more on natural storytelling, cinematic visuals and authentic moments rather than staged scenes.” Because for him, every wedding is a completely new experience. “What I love about this work is that every wedding is different. Different people, different energy, different places.”
And the goal remains constant. “My goal is always to create a film that feels personal and timeless, something couples can watch years later and immediately reconnect with the emotions of that day.”
Carlo’s style lives in a delicate balance between visual beauty and emotional truth.
While inspired by editorial aesthetics, authenticity always comes first. “I don’t like to over-direct couples or stage moments too much. Instead, I focus on observing what’s happening and capturing the atmosphere of the day as it naturally unfolds.”
It is often the smallest moments that carry the most meaning. “I love those in-between moments, a quick glance, a laugh with friends, the quiet seconds before the ceremony, because that’s where the real story lives.” And ultimately, everything leads back to one idea. “The goal is to create a wedding film that feels timeless and immersive, something that brings you back to the exact feeling of the day every time you watch it.”
Behind the simplicity of his films lies a carefully considered technical approach. “I work with professional 4K cinema cameras with stabilizers to ensure very high image quality and a cinematic look.” The landscape itself often becomes part of the story. “I also use drones for aerial perspectives, which are perfect for showcasing the incredible landscapes and venues we often work in across Italy.” At times, Carlo introduces unexpected textures into his films. “Sometimes I use a vintage Handycam for a nostalgic, spontaneous feel, and Super 8 film when couples want something truly timeless and emotional.”
But beyond visuals, sound plays an equally important role.
Because for him, storytelling is never just visual. “For me, great sound is just as important as great visuals.”
At the heart of every film lies something deeper than aesthetics — emotion. “What I enjoy most is the emotional side of the job.” Weddings are filled with moments that cannot be recreated. “Every wedding is full of real moments, the anticipation before the ceremony, the reactions during the vows, the energy during the celebration.” And preserving those moments carries a certain weight. “Being able to capture those emotions and turn them into something that couples can relive for the rest of their lives is incredibly meaningful.”
Perhaps the most rewarding moment comes later — when the story comes full circle. “But probably the most rewarding moment is when couples watch their film and tell me it brought them right back to that day.”
Every project begins with listening. “For me, everything starts with understanding the couple and the atmosphere they want for their wedding.” Before the day unfolds, there is space for conversation, clarity, and shared vision. “Before the wedding we usually talk about their vision, the location, and what matters most to them during the day.”
On the wedding day itself, the approach remains subtle and intuitive. “I work in a very discreet and natural way. I don’t like to interrupt the flow of the day too much, I prefer to observe, anticipate moments and capture things as they happen.” Because the final result should feel true — not constructed. “In the end, the goal is to create a film that feels authentic to them. Something that reflects not only how the wedding looked, but how it actually felt.”
When asked what couples should focus on, Carlo’s answer moves beyond logistics.
He believes that authenticity always outlasts trends. “Sometimes couples feel pressure to follow trends or expectations, but the most beautiful weddings are always the ones that reflect the couple’s personality and energy.”
Trust plays an equally important role. “Another tip is to trust the team you choose.” And above all, presence. “And finally, try to really live the day. Weddings go by incredibly fast, so take a moment to look around, be with your people, and enjoy every second.”
Destination weddings are at the core of Carlo’s work, with Italy as the central stage. “Many of the couples I work with travel to Italy to celebrate their wedding, so I often work in places like Venice, Lake Como, Tuscany and Rome.” Each location offers something unique. “If I had to choose a favorite destination, I would probably say Rome. It has an incredible mix of history, architecture and atmosphere… this creates a very cinematic backdrop for a wedding film.”
At the same time, new destinations continue to inspire. “Working in different countries, cultures and landscapes is always inspiring and allows me to approach every wedding with fresh eyes and new creative ideas.”
When reflecting on the weddings that leave the strongest impression, the answer is not about scale. “It’s actually very hard to choose just one, because every wedding has something unique that stays with me.” Instead, it comes down to something more intangible. “The ones I remember the most are usually the ones where there is a very strong emotional connection. In the end, it’s not about how big or luxurious the wedding is, it’s about how it feels.”
Some of the most powerful moments are the ones that no one plans. “One of the most unexpected moments I’ve seen happened during a very elegant and well-planned wedding in Italy. It suddenly started raining quite heavily.” But instead of disrupting the celebration, it transformed it. “The couple embraced it… Guests started laughing, dancing under the rain.” And in that moment, something even more real emerged. “As a filmmaker, those are the moments you can’t plan, but they often become the most powerful ones.”
Sometimes, the most meaningful images happen when no one is paying attention to the camera. “One shot that always makes me smile is when the couple forgets about the camera.” It is in those quiet, unguarded moments that everything feels real. “There’s no posing, no direction, just a real connection between them.”
Even after years of experience, certain moments never lose their emotional weight. “One moment that always gets me is the vows. Another moment that often brings tears is the parents’ reactions.” And no matter how many weddings pass, those emotions remain.
For Carlo, the purpose of a wedding film goes beyond the present moment.
Because trends fade — but feelings remain. “At the end of the day, a wedding film is more than just a video. It becomes a way to relive the atmosphere, the people and the feelings of that day, again and again.”
In the world of Carlo Zanetti, wedding films are not about perfection. They are about presence, emotion, and the quiet moments in between — the ones that, years later, still feel exactly the same.
