Château Gassies: A Grand Bordeaux Estate

The original plan was simple: come home to France after thirty years abroad, find somewhere beautiful, and finally stop moving. Château Gassies was meant to be a private home. A place just for them. Then Géraldine and Ben stood in the grounds and understood, fairly quickly, that keeping all of this to themselves was not really an option.

Five years of restoration followed - every stone, every detail, every choice made by two people who were returning something they genuinely loved to its fullest expression, rather than developing a commercial property. When Château Gassies opened in 2019, it did so not as a business that had learned to feel personal, but as a home that had chosen to open itself to the world. That distinction runs through everything about how the château operates, and couples feel it from the moment they arrive.

An Estate in the Heights of Bordeaux

Château Gassies sits in Latresne, in the heights of the Bordeaux region, surrounded by vineyards, acclaimed local restaurants, and the kind of French countryside that does a significant amount of the work before a single flower has been arranged. The estate accommodates up to 150 guests and hosts no more than 30 weddings per year - a number kept intentionally limited to ensure that every couple receives the full attention of a team that treats each celebration as the only one on the calendar.

Accommodation on the property sleeps up to 43 guests across suites and gîtes, every one of them furnished with antique pieces that Géraldine and Ben selected personally at auction. The morning after a wedding at Château Gassies tends to look like a brunch by the pool with the people you love most - which is, by any measure, the correct way to end a wedding weekend.

Packages run from two to three nights and include breakfast, full use of the facilities - pool, tennis courts, gym - and fully air-conditioned accommodation for all 43 guests, the couple included. Two-night packages start at €21,000 on weekdays and €23,000 on weekends; three-night packages begin at €26,000 on weekdays and €28,500 on weekends. For what is included, these figures are worth understanding before comparing them against venues that price differently and deliver considerably less.

The Spaces

The ceremony options at Château Gassies span a range of atmospheres that most venues could not offer individually, let alone together. The Calèche Courtyard is a 100m² stone space with arched windows and a historic carriage - intimate and architectural in equal measure. The Orangerie Courtyard offers an elegant and luminous space set against stone walls - "the perfect option for a warm ceremony." The Orangerie itself is a typically ornate 70m² working Orangery, with large glass windows "offering a majestic, dazzling space" - the kind of space that produces a genuine reaction from guests who weren't expecting it. For outdoor ceremonies, the Oak Grove offers "a naturally elegant and intimate setting" beneath towering trees. And the Central Garden at the heart of the castle opens into something considerably more grand.

For the reception, the Charles X Room seats up to 150 guests beneath stone walls, exposed beams, antique chandeliers, and mirrors. When the season allows, dinner moves outside into the grounds before continuing inside through the night - a sequence that, in the right conditions, is difficult to improve upon.

Catering is not provided in-house beyond breakfast, but the château works with nine trusted catering partners. What the Seasons Do to This Place

One thing the Château Gassies team raises without much prompting is the question of season - specifically, the assumption that a château wedding must mean a summer wedding. Autumn at Gassies is something couples consistently underestimate until they see it: "the different shades of leaves create an enchanting setting whilst the golden sunlight warms up the atmosphere." Winter, when the property turns white, shifts the entire visual register into something closer to a fairy tale.

Most couples who visit the château during these periods are surprised at how magical and original the backdrop looks, leaving an impression of a possible fairy tale celebration.
