If you've ever dreamed of a wedding that feels entirely, unmistakably you - not a trend board, not a Pinterest compilation, but a genuine reflection of who you are as a couple - Matthew Oliver Weddings is the team you want in your corner. Based in the charming town of Bradford-on-Avon in England, Matthew and his co-owner and partner Bertie have spent well over a decade building one of the most respected wedding planning houses in the world. And after spending time getting to know their story, we at Wezoree are completely won over.

A Love Story With the Industry Itself

Matthew's entry into wedding planning wasn't exactly planned. While working in Greece, he stumbled into the world of events almost by accident - and it stuck.

I instantly fell in love with the challenge and discovered a natural talent for it - especially when it came to building deep connections with couples and becoming friends with suppliers.

After years of planning weddings abroad, he returned to the UK with a clear vision. "My dream was simple: to be a planner who gives back to couples, making the planning process fun, creative, and as stress-free as possible." Matthew Oliver Weddings was born in 2012, though Matthew had already been planning weddings in Cyprus for four years prior to that - so the experience runs deep.

Around that same time, Bertie entered the picture, first as a quiet presence in the background, then officially as co-owner roughly seven to eight years ago. Today, the team is spread across the country, operating less like a corporate agency and more like a close-knit family. That warmth comes through in every conversation, and we think it's one of the biggest reasons couples keep coming back - and keep sending their friends.

The Way They Work - and Why It Feels Different

What sets Matthew Oliver Weddings apart from the very first conversation is how deliberately they build the process around each couple rather than the other way around.

"Some couples love face-to-face meetings, others email threads and in some instances WhatsApp is the best communication tool. Each couple is different, with some wanting to be involved in the smaller details, and others just wanting an overview of the bigger picture, having us make the smaller decisions for them. We are used to flexing the process to best fit."

They kick things off by sourcing the perfect destination and venue, then build the full framework around it - booking suppliers, shaping the design, crafting the atmosphere - before bringing everything to life in the final stretch. Crucially, they take on all guest communication throughout, which means that by the time the wedding weekend arrives, they already feel like old friends to everyone walking through the door. The team plans around ten events per year, a number that is entirely intentional. This is not a volume business. Every couple on their books gets genuine, focused attention from a team that is truly invested - and it shows.

What Matthew Loves Most About the Job

"I love that we get to start each project with a blank slate, creating a wedding unique to each couple. They end up so different every time!"

For Matthew, the creative freedom is one thing - but the relationships are what make this work truly special. "We are always so lucky to build incredible relationships with our couples and wedding suppliers, so experiencing the planning journey alongside them is very special. Quite often, we end up with life-long friendships - and not many jobs provide an environment to create that sort of close relationship." That warmth is not incidental. It is the whole point of everything Matthew Oliver Weddings does, and you feel it from the very first interaction.

Italy and France have long been their most-requested destinations, and with good reason - the team has an extraordinary network across both countries built over many years of working there. England and Spain have been growing steadily over the last couple of years, and this year they are heading to Turkey for the very first time, a milestone they are genuinely excited about.

From the English Countryside, to New York City, or the Caribbean - we work everywhere!

The enthusiasm is real, and so is the infrastructure behind it.

The Venues That Steal Their Hearts

Their venue preferences tell you a great deal about their taste. They are devoted Four Seasons fans, drawn above all to the consistency of service at every property around the world - "the service is always second to none, which is very important to our couples." They also hold a deep affection for Aman Sveti Stefan, which is set to reopen imminently and which Matthew hopes to return to for another wedding very soon.

But it is the standalone gems that really light them up. Villa Gamberaia in Florence and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello both hold a special place in the team's history, with previous projects at each location that clearly left a lasting impression. "Both have the most showstopping views," Matthew says - and having seen the images from those properties, we are not about to argue. These are venues with soul, with history, with a quality of light and setting that no purpose-built event space can replicate. Matthew Oliver Weddings knows exactly how to honour that.

The Wedding That Has Stayed With Them

When we asked Matthew which wedding has stayed with him most, the answer came with genuine, infectious joy. Lexie and Taylor's 2022 celebration at Château du Grand-Lucé in France was inspired by Marie Antoinette - but with what Matthew describes as "a Sofia Coppola punk twist." Guests were taken on a four-day journey through a series of events, each one building on the last, each one more considered and more spectacular than anything they could have anticipated.

"The bride had such a creative vision, which made it an amazing collaboration - we love when couples come to us with a story to tell, which we can then bring to life in the events and details. Also, the fashion was INCREDIBLE!" This is exactly the kind of project that defines what Matthew Oliver Weddings does at its absolute best: bold, deeply personal, and completely unforgettable. When a couple arrives with a vision this vivid, this team knows precisely how to take it and make it even more extraordinary than the couple dared to dream.

The Honest Conversation About Budgets

This is where Matthew earns our particular respect - because not every planner at this level is willing to have the difficult conversation early. "Couples are constantly fed photos of weddings and there is no transparency about the budget - they could well be looking at a £2 million+ wedding which isn't attainable for their own wedding. An important part of our role is to educate our couples from the get-go, which should limit this challenge further down the line."

It takes real confidence and genuine care to deliver that message clearly and kindly before the planning even begins. But it is exactly this kind of honesty that saves couples from spending months chasing a version of their day that was never really theirs to begin with - and it is why the relationships Matthew Oliver Weddings builds are built on such solid ground.

What He Wants Every Couple to Hear

"Build in ‘wiggle room’. There is nothing worse than feeling rushed through a day that will already go by so quickly. Allow lots of time for getting ready and especially for getting into your dress. The morning is a sacred time, which is so nice to look back and treasure, so rushing through this can set the mood for the day. Think realistically about balancing photos and your experience as the guest of honour. Do you want to join the cocktail hour, or don’t you mind? The timeline creates the experience of your day from the get go."

We would print this on a card and hand it to every couple. It is simple, considered, and completely right - the kind of advice that only comes from having stood in the room and watched what happens when a morning runs beautifully, and when it doesn't.

In a world saturated with wedding content, trend reports, and an endless stream of opinions about what couples should and should not do, Matthew's core advice cuts straight through all of it: "Remember that it's YOUR day, a day to celebrate YOUR love. Go for the traditions you want, the design, the entertainment - it is all about you as a couple and your love. Not about box ticking or trends. There is such a narrative at the moment trying to warn people off certain colours, certain traditions, when really you should just be able to include what you like, even if it is the 'colour of the year!'" We couldn't agree more.

Planning With a Conscience

Sustainability is not a footnote for Matthew Oliver Weddings - it is woven into the fabric of how they operate. Matthew's passion for nature drives a genuine, active commitment to eco-friendly practices across every project, working with clients, vendors, and venues to make better choices at every turn. The team offsets all travel emissions, makes annual donations to animal charities, and this year is going a step further by volunteering together for an environmental cause.

The event industry is notoriously wasteful, and we believe it is our responsibility to protect the planet by making every choice count.

For couples who want their celebration to sit well in the wider world - who want to mark one of the most joyful days of their lives without leaving a heavy footprint behind - this is a team that not only understands that feeling, they share it completely.
