In the world of wedding photography, some capture moments, and then some create timeless works of art. Malou von Baumhauer is undoubtedly part of the latter group. With a career that spans over 15 years, Malou has honed her skills to perfection, combining her love for editorial photography with a passion for storytelling through nostalgic imagery. Today, we delve into the journey of this talented photographer, uncovering what drives her creativity, and how she manages to capture moments that transcend time.

From a Gift to a Calling

Malou’s journey into photography began with a heartfelt gift. “It all started when my dad gave me a camera for my 16th birthday. It was the best gift he could’ve given me,” she recalls. With that camera, she began capturing the world around her, starting with her family’s dog and her younger sister as her first muses.

As her passion grew, so did her ambitions. “I asked model agencies for collabs with their models. I was a fashion photographer for a few years,” says Malou. However, her true calling came during her wedding. “I saw my wedding photographer at work and I just knew—that’s what I want to do!” Inspired, she embarked on her journey as a wedding photographer, taking workshops and mentorships to perfect her craft.

The Editorial Touch

When asked about her style, Malou describes her work as a blend of editorial elegance with a nostalgic twist. “I love the editorial vibe all the way. I want to create nostalgic photography pieces you can hang on the wall or see in a magazine,” she explains. It’s this distinct blend of art and emotion that makes her work stand out.

A key element of her signature look is her use of 35mm film. “For me, it’s the best combo to give those editorial images a nostalgic and timeless feel,” she adds. By integrating analog techniques into her modern workflow, Malou creates images that not only capture the essence of the moment but also evoke a sense of nostalgia that clients can cherish for years to come.

The Gear That Brings Stories to Life

Every artist has their tools, and for Malou, it’s a carefully selected mix of digital and analog equipment that allows her to bring her vision to life. “I use the Nikon Z6II body, a 24-70mm lens, flash, polaroids, and a few point-and-shoot analog cameras,” she says. Each piece of equipment plays a vital role in achieving the unique aesthetic that defines her work. The analog cameras, in particular, are a favorite for adding that signature nostalgic touch to her photos.

When it comes to post-processing, Malou believes in keeping it minimal yet impactful. “I want to give my digital images the analog look but with an editorial flair. It’s true to color, but with a punch of glam,” she says. This approach ensures that her images remain authentic while still retaining a stylish edge.

The Joy of Human Connection

For Malou, photography is not just about capturing beautiful images—it’s about the people she meets and the connections she forms along the way. “I love meeting new people! It’s so much fun,” she shares enthusiastically. “I truly think I have the best job in the whole world. I can crash weddings, capture beauty, meet wonderful human beings, have a good laugh, eat good food, and enjoy amazing venues.”

But beyond the joy and excitement, there is a deeper purpose to her work. “The main goal is to capture memories so they can be preserved for new generations to come. To tell the stories behind the pictures,” she says. It’s this sense of responsibility that drives her to deliver images that will stand the test of time.

Collaboration is Key

When working with couples, Malou emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration. “It’s all about good communication upfront and preparations,” she notes. She ensures that every couple she works with feels heard and understood, creating a customized experience tailored to their specific needs.

To achieve this, Malou begins with an initial meeting to establish a connection with her clients. “I want to meet my clients so we can feel if there’s a connection,” she explains. Before the wedding day, she sends out a detailed questionnaire and encourages couples to share their mood boards, allowing her to fully understand their vision. “I see it as a collaboration,” she adds, ensuring that both she and the couple are aligned in creating something truly special.

Destination Dreams

Malou’s love for weddings doesn’t stop at local venues. As a destination wedding photographer, she’s had the opportunity to shoot in stunning locations across the globe. “I do a few destination weddings per year, and I’m in love with weddings in Italy,” she says. For her, the beauty of Italy—its landscapes, its architecture, and its light—provides the perfect backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments.

Looking Ahead

As Malou continues to grow in her craft, she remains committed to pushing the boundaries of wedding photography. She always is looking to evolve her style while staying true to her editorial roots. By blending the old with the new, the glamorous with the genuine, Malou’s work continues to resonate with couples who seek not just photographs, but memories that will last a lifetime.

For those lucky enough to work with her, Malou von Baumhauer offers more than just beautiful images—she offers a glimpse into a world where every moment is a masterpiece, and every story is told with heart.
