"I want my imagery to have an old-world traditional elegance but with a modern and romantically raw aesthetic," Michael Toman says when describing his signature style. The founder of Story of Eve, Michael has spent over 12 years in the wedding industry, creating visual stories that go far beyond traditional photography. His journey, however, began long before weddings became his focus.
"Back then, I dove headfirst into starting my own business, only to discover I had a lot to learn about the essentials: finances, marketing, sales, and the countless skills that make a business thrive," he recalls. That realization led him to return to university and earn a degree in Interactive Multimedia Design. This pivotal decision shaped his future, leading to a successful career in branding and editorial design before eventually bringing him back to photography.
Michael’s photography is defined by its timelessness, elegance, and emotion. With a background in branding and editorial design, Michael brings a unique blend of creativity and precision to his work. Whether he’s documenting intimate garden parties, opulent manor house gatherings, luxurious travel experiences, or breathtaking dining events aboard private yachts, every story he captures is as distinct as the people behind it.
By limiting himself to just ten weddings per year, Michael ensures each client receives a deeply personalized and unparalleled experience. He works closely with his clients, offering tailored packages that reflect their unique needs and preferences.
"I believe every couple and client deserves a personalized approach tailored to their unique needs. For some, this means collaborating closely through multiple Zoom calls, shared Pinterest boards, and carefully refined timelines," he says. "For others, it’s about working seamlessly with their planner to ensure every detail is beautifully captured." Michael’s approach is flexible, adapting to the level of involvement his clients want.
“Many of my clients are busy professionals who trust that with the right team in place, everything will come together effortlessly. Time and again, I’ve found this to be true—it’s a privilege to be part of that trust and deliver an exceptional experience, no matter the approach,” he adds.
Michael’s dedication to his craft extends to the tools he uses. "I shoot on two Sony A1 cameras primarily," he says. But his gear doesn’t stop there. "I have a ton of lenses, lighting setups, drones, some old VHS cameras, and other equipment," he explains. His equipment choices vary depending on the event, ensuring every shoot is approached with precision.
When it comes to post-production, Michael’s attention to detail is just as evident. "All of my imagery is edited in Adobe Lightroom where I apply my custom colour or black and white preset," he shares. "I typically have a clean colour and black and white preset but often interchange this with other bespoke colours and grains to prevent everything feeling too predictable."
Michael’s work takes him around the world to some of the most stunning wedding destinations. "I’m fortunate to capture events across the globe, with unforgettable celebrations in places like Brazil, Thailand, Switzerland, the United States, and the Bahamas, to name just a few," he says.
When asked about his favorite destination, he doesn’t hesitate. "My all-time favourite wedding destination has to be Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas—it was absolutely stunning!" he recalls.
While his portfolio includes grand, luxurious events, Michael is most inspired by the raw, unscripted emotions of a wedding day. "I’m incredibly grateful for a career that takes me around the world, introduces me to amazing people, and allows me to capture unforgettable moments—from vibrant events and lavish parties to intimate glimpses into lives I might never have encountered otherwise," he shares.
“But it’s not just about grand settings or luxury—it’s the raw, unscripted emotions, the fleeting moments that unfold naturally, that inspire me. These are the memories that matter most,” he says, emphasizing his commitment to capturing the human side of every event.
When it comes to choosing a photographer, Michael has simple but important advice: "Take your time, do your research, and choose a photographer whose work resonates with you," he says.
But perhaps the most important part of his guidance comes after the decision has been made. "Once you’ve made that decision that feels right, trust your photographer from that point forward—you’ll be amazed by the results!" he assures.
Though weddings are a core part of his work, Michael’s talents extend to a variety of projects, from branding to private family celebrations. "Weddings, while a cherished part of my journey, are just one facet," he explains. “I also consult for brands and capture the stories of private clients, families, and celebrations—beautifully personal moments that often remain off social media but hold immeasurable meaning.”
“My work also gives me the gift of time with my wife and kids, and I’m grateful for clients who trust my creative vision and allow me to do what I love,” he says with gratitude.
When reflecting on his role in weddings and large events, Michael is quick to highlight the collaborative nature of these celebrations. "Weddings and large events are full of moving parts, with creative talent at every touchpoint—from makeup artists and hairstylists to planners, cake makers, caterers, bands, and sound engineers, to name just a few," he shares.
He continues with humility and appreciation, "I’m just one piece of this intricate puzzle, and my work wouldn’t be possible without the trust of my clients and the collaboration of these talented creatives. Keeping this in mind helps me stay focused on my role within the bigger picture, ensuring every moment is captured with intention and appreciation."
