Wedding photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about capturing stories. Few understand this better than Sandrine Philie, a wedding photographer based in the Netherlands, whose passion for photography began early and has since blossomed into a thriving career. With a unique blend of documentary and editorial styles, Sandrine is known for her ability to freeze fleeting moments while infusing them with a sense of timeless artistry.
We sat down with Sandrine to dive into her journey, her approach to wedding photography, and what continues to inspire her behind the lens.
Like many photographers, Sandrine’s journey began in a different realm of photography. “I started at a very young age, mostly doing portraits,” she recalls. Portraits soon transitioned into fashion photography, but it wasn’t until she discovered wedding photography that everything clicked into place.
"I was already 'the girl with the camera' in high school, carrying my DSLR around whenever there was a school event," Sandrine shares with a smile. Inspired by the works of photography legends like Annie Leibovitz and Henri Cartier-Bresson, she spent years honing her craft. Eventually, weddings became the perfect outlet for her creativity. “With weddings, I was able to truly bring my creativity to the forefront. A wedding is the best mix and opportunity for documenting and creating.”
When asked to define her photography style, Sandrine describes it as “documentary with an editorial twist.” It’s a balance between letting moments unfold naturally and then elevating them into something even more beautiful. “Capturing moments as they happen, highlighting emotions, and immortalizing candid events of the day is the core of my photography,” she explains.
The editorial side comes through in how she uses light, surroundings, and composition to create images that feel polished yet spontaneous. “I want the photographs to be timeless, not overly edited, but instead focusing on what is portrayed. The editorial twist comes from creating images that feel elevated, using the surroundings and the light to create something more than 'just a photo.'”
For Sandrine, equipment is an essential part of her creative process. She uses two Canon mirrorless bodies and has a deep love for analog photography, which she incorporates into her wedding shoots. "Analog is also a big part of my work and style," she says. Alongside her digital kit, she also brings two analog cameras and a Polaroid to weddings, adding that extra layer of nostalgia that couples love.
“Of course, I use other essentials such as a flash,” Sandrine adds, ensuring she’s prepared for every lighting situation. But more than the gear, she can adapt and see the beauty in every setting that defines her as a photographer.
In the world of wedding photography, post-processing is just as important as capturing the moment itself. Sandrine believes in quality over quantity, carefully selecting each image that tells the story of the day. “Every image is carefully selected,” she says. "I mostly edit every photo, trying to stay as true to colour as possible, while adding my own signature to it, which I'd like to describe as timeless, nostalgic, and a tad vintage."
Her attention to detail ensures that every couple receives a gallery that’s both vibrant and authentic. “Every photo is delivered in both color and black and white,” she shares, giving couples a range of options to choose from in their final album.
When asked what she enjoys most about being a wedding photographer, Sandrine lights up. “I am so grateful that I get to do this full-time. I really love what I do and where it takes me!” she exclaims.
For Sandrine, the joy of her work comes from more than just beautiful locations—though European venues certainly add a special touch. “Coming from Canada, I am always in awe of European venues' architecture and gardens,” she says. “It is a significant source of inspiration for me.”
But what truly fuels her passion is the raw emotion she witnesses at every wedding. “What I enjoy the most is seeing all the love, laughter, and emotions that happen during a wedding. It is truly special to be in such a beautiful line of work.”
Every wedding is different, and Sandrine’s approach is deeply collaborative. She makes it a point to get to know each couple she works with to ensure their personalities shine through in the photos. “I always plan a few phone calls with them and tailor my approach to every couple,” she explains. Whether a couple wants a quick portrait session or prefers to spend time exploring multiple locations, Sandrine adapts her style to fit their needs.
One key element of her process is scouting the venue ahead of time. “I always visit the venue the day before or arrive early enough on the day to do some scouting and understand the light,” she says. This preparation allows her to make the most of the location’s natural beauty while ensuring the couple feels comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. “During the couple’s shoot, I always like to direct while keeping them in movement so that nothing feels forced or uncomfortable.”
Understanding that no two weddings are alike, Sandrine is committed to offering personalized packages for each couple. “I usually have a phone call with the couple to discuss their day and see if we are a good match,” she says. From there, she crafts a custom package that reflects their unique needs, whether it’s a destination wedding or a local affair.
As a photographer who thrives on travel, Sandrine has had the opportunity to shoot weddings in some of the world’s most beautiful locations. “Most of my weddings are destination weddings!” she shares enthusiastically. When it comes to her favorite destination, Italy tops the list. “I have a thing for Italy and its gorgeous villas,” she says. But Portugal is another beloved destination, with its stunning landscapes and charming atmosphere.
Reflecting on her journey as a photographer, Sandrine expresses deep gratitude for the path she’s chosen. “There is so much to love about this work, from traveling to the most beautiful spots to being a part of one of my couple's most important days,” she says.
Her dedication to her craft, her passion for storytelling, and her ability to connect with the couples she works with make Sandrine Philie a wedding photographer to watch. Whether capturing candid moments or creating editorial masterpieces, she continues to weave magic through the lens, one wedding at a time.
