For over 15 years, Maritha Mae has been crafting exquisite wedding narratives that blend refined luxury with an editorial sensibility. Originally from Southern California and now based in Singapore, her work has taken her across the world, capturing love stories in breathtaking destinations. With an eye for natural, intimate moments and a deep appreciation for elegant composition, she curates images that resonate through generations.
Wezoree had the privilege of speaking with Maritha about her artistic journey, philosophy, and approach to wedding photography.
Maritha’s love for photography began as a means to document life’s fleeting moments. Over time, her fascination evolved into a career that allows her to preserve one of life’s most significant celebrations: weddings.
“I live to capture natural, timeless, and intimate moments that evoke each couple’s unique chemistry,” she shares. Her style seamlessly weaves together luxury and emotion, resulting in imagery that feels both sophisticated and deeply personal.
When asked how she would define her approach, Maritha describes it as “refined luxury with a candid editorial approach.” Her images exude a graceful, effortless beauty that elevates even the most spontaneous moments. “I look for meaning and personal connection in everything I do,” she explains.
Maritha’s use of light is a defining characteristic of her work. Whether it’s the golden glow of a sunset or the soft ambiance of a candlelit reception, she masterfully enhances every scene’s natural beauty. Her compositions are elegant and intentional, yet they never feel staged or forced.
To bring her creative vision to life, Maritha relies on a combination of digital and film cameras. “I shoot with the Canon R series, Leica SL2, Contax 645, and Canon EOS 1-V,” she reveals. By blending modern technology with classic film aesthetics, she ensures that her images maintain a sense of warmth and authenticity.
Post-production is an integral part of Maritha’s artistic process. “All our images are edited to the colors, look, and feel that are found in our portfolio,” she says. Each gallery undergoes meticulous refinement to uphold her high standards. “I take a lot of pride in the post-production process and personally go through each of the images more times than you can imagine with eagle eyes.”
Beyond color grading and tonal adjustments, she also performs selective retouching to enhance the final presentation. “This usually includes removal of exit signs, distracting or unwanted objects in the background, as well as refining details like stray hairs or minor blemishes.” The result is a gallery that not only reflects the authenticity of the day but also presents it in its most polished form.
For Maritha, wedding photography is not just about capturing beautiful images—it’s about telling a deeply personal story. “I always sit down with them over Zoom or in person to get to know them on a deeper level,” she says. She listens intently to their story, their vision, and their concerns, ensuring that every photograph aligns with their expectations.
To further tailor the experience, she encourages couples to create inspiration mood boards. “Then I approach their wedding with everything they’ve shared and combine it with my creative style and expertise,” she explains. This collaboration allows her to craft imagery that is both artistically compelling and uniquely meaningful to each couple.
While planning is essential, Maritha emphasizes the importance of leaving room for organic moments. “If you want candid, documentary-style photos that feel real and intimate, make sure to leave room for those genuine, unplanned moments to happen,” she advises. A well-structured timeline allows couples to relax and be fully present on their wedding day, creating space for the most authentic memories to unfold.
No two weddings are alike, and Maritha believes that photography packages should reflect that uniqueness. “Absolutely—every single proposal we send out is custom-tailored to each client’s needs,” she affirms. Whether it’s an intimate elopement or a grand multi-day celebration, she ensures that each couple receives a collection that truly reflects their day.
Reflecting on her career, Maritha shares a piece of advice for aspiring photographers: “Don’t stop shooting. Henri Cartier-Bresson famously said, ‘Your first 10,000 photos are your worst.’” She believes that mastering photography requires persistence and a willingness to continually refine one’s craft. “Put in the time learning your craft, understanding your equipment, and developing your own personal creative voice.”
Maritha’s passion for travel has led her to some of the world’s most stunning wedding destinations. “My favorite destination to shoot is anywhere I haven’t shot before,” she says with excitement. However, certain locations hold a special place in her heart. “Of course, I'm partial to places marked with grandeur like Big Sur in California or locations filled with character like Taormina in Sicily.”
Wherever she goes, her goal remains the same: to craft images that transcend time, transporting couples back to the emotions of their wedding day with just a single glance.
Maritha Mae’s ability to merge artistry with emotion has solidified her reputation as a leading luxury wedding photographer. With a keen eye for detail, an intuitive approach to storytelling, and a dedication to her craft, she continues to create images that not only capture love but celebrate it in its most breathtaking form.
For couples seeking a photographer who blends editorial elegance with heartfelt storytelling, Maritha Mae offers an experience that is as timeless as the love she captures.
