For Stacey McLean, photography was never simply about documenting what happens — it was about understanding how it feels. Before entering the wedding world, she spent years immersed in fashion, drawn to styling, editorial imagery, and the quiet rhythm of visual storytelling.

“I started my creative journey in fashion,” Stacey explains. “I was always drawn to editorial imagery, styling, and the rhythm of visual storytelling, before turning my eye toward weddings.”

That foundation still shapes her work today. Her images carry the elegance of fashion photography while remaining grounded in real emotion.

“Over the years I’ve blended that editorial sensibility with documentary storytelling, creating work that feels refined yet real, timeless yet rooted in the moment.”

While Stacey has photographed weddings for over three years, her relationship with the camera spans more than a decade — including extensive work in fashion, beauty, photography, and videography.

This experience informs her ability to see weddings differently. She approaches each moment with the same attention to light, texture, and composition that defined her editorial beginnings — while remaining deeply sensitive to the authenticity of the day.

An Editorial and Documentary Approach in Balance

Stacey’s style exists at a thoughtful intersection — neither purely editorial nor purely documentary, but an intentional blend of both.

“My style sits at the intersection of editorial and documentary,” she says. “It’s informed by my fashion background with an emphasis on striking light, thoughtful composition, and beautiful moments, but ultimately rooted in authenticity.”

Her work preserves real connection while elevating it visually.

I capture real connections and emotions while shaping imagery that feels polished, intentional, and beautifully modern.

Digital Precision and Analogue Soul

Stacey works primarily with Canon professional camera systems for photography and Sony for video, tools she trusts for their reliability and ability to render natural light beautifully.

Alongside digital, she incorporates film formats — including 35mm film and Super 8 — to introduce depth and emotional texture.

“These analogue formats add texture, movement, and a sense of nostalgia,” she explains. “They complement my editorial approach and bring another layer of depth to the final imagery.”

Editing with Restraint and Respect

Post-production plays an important role in Stacey’s creative process — but her philosophy is rooted in restraint rather than transformation.

“Editing is thoughtful and restrained — focusing on clean, natural colour, balanced contrast, and preserving the mood of the day.”

Her goal is not to alter reality, but to refine it.

“My aim is to elevate what’s there — the light, the emotion, the authentic details — without ever overpowering it.”

The Beauty of Unscripted Moments

For Stacey, the most meaningful part of photography happens in the moments no one plans.

“I love that moment when something real unfolds — a look, a laugh, a quiet exchange — and I get to freeze it in a way that feels beautiful and meaningful.”

This sensitivity allows her to document weddings with honesty and emotional depth.

There’s an art in honouring tenderness and joy without staging it.

A Collaborative, Thoughtful Client Experience

Stacey’s process begins with conversation — understanding not only logistics, but emotional context.

“I pay close attention to how a couple expresses themselves — their style, their priorities, their fears and hopes.”

She guides gently rather than directing forcefully, allowing the day’s natural energy to shape the images.

“I listen deeply and let the natural energy of the day inform the visuals.”

Every wedding receives a tailored approach, with custom packages designed to reflect each couple’s unique story.

Advice for Couples: Create Space for Presence

Her advice to couples is simple, but essential.

Plan with ease in mind. Give space in your timeline, enjoy the morning unhurried, and let yourselves be present with one another.

When couples relax, the images naturally reflect that emotional openness.

“When couples relax into the day, the images naturally reflect that beautiful, carefree energy.”

Destination Weddings and Creative Inspiration

Stacey is deeply inspired by travel and regularly photographs destination weddings, particularly drawn to places rich in atmosphere and visual character.

“Europe, and Italy in particular, holds a special place in my heart,” she says. “Its colours, atmosphere and scale feel like a continuation of the fashion and editorial worlds that first inspired me.”

Photography as Feeling, Not Just Seeing

At its core, Stacey’s work is about emotional truth — not perfection.

“Wedding photography, like fashion, is about feeling as much as seeing.”

She finds meaning in the quiet, fleeting moments that often go unnoticed.

“A half-smile between siblings, a tear caught in side-light, the way light falls through a veil.”

These subtle moments, preserved honestly and beautifully, are what define her work.

That sense, that emotion, is what I aim to honour in every frame.

Through her editorial eye and documentary sensitivity, Stacey McLean creates imagery that lives beyond trends — photographs shaped by light, guided by feeling, and grounded in authenticity.
