“I’m sure that if you gathered the entire population of children in any country in the world and asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up, 0.0001% would answer: I want to be a florist,” Alejandro Salas laughs, reflecting on his unexpected path into the wedding industry.
Born in Mexico with a degree in Communications and a specialization in Film, Alejandro didn’t set out to become a floral designer. But sometimes, life gently nudges us where we were always meant to be.
“Once you touch a flower, if you’ve been called to be a florist, the response of your total being is immediate, and you’ll never be able to leave them,” he says. This was the beginning of Día Uno—a floral studio built on emotion, intuition, and artistry.
For Alejandro, floral design is not just decoration—it’s narration. “The most rewarding part of being a wedding florist is undoubtedly having the many opportunities to explore design using different shapes, materials, and colors—and to experience the natural aroma of a fine fragrance up close.”
But his work goes beyond aesthetic beauty. Alejandro sees each wedding as a sacred narrative. “We call this Día Uno, that moment that isn’t past, future, or present, but a precise, seemingly fragmented instant that marks the birth of a new family.”
He continues, “Imagine having the chance to be the narrator of one of the most important stories in a couple’s life. Eight to ten continuous moments of being part of something that will remain etched in the couple’s photographic memory, in their hearts, and in ours.”
When asked about his most memorable wedding experience, Alejandro immediately recalls a project in Oaxaca. “I love Mexico, and Oaxaca holds a very special place in my heart for all the ancestral memories its handcrafted pieces hold.”
He describes the experience with reverence: “It’s such a privilege to integrate pieces from local artisans and give them the starring role they deserve alongside the flowers. I still remember how my heart beat so hard when I felt my floral design fully integrated with vases and art objects that have existed long before I was born…”
Alejandro’s design philosophy embraces context as a muse. “At weddings, flowers become an artistic element and an essential architectural object for creating a livable space,” he explains. “Integrating elements and objects that are part of the environment is essential in our floral design.”
It’s not unusual for him to forage plants, branches, and local flora to seamlessly blend the story of the location with the visual language of the florals. “The idea of integrating any element will always be to help interpret the story we want to tell.”
In an age of Pinterest boards and fleeting trends, Alejandro takes a more soulful approach. “Of course, it’s important to know what’s happening in the world,” he says, “but I don’t like to follow trends… it’s not that I’m rebellious—it’s that I love being me.”
“Our flowers will always seek to tell authentic stories of real people.”
Alejandro has a practical yet poetic tip for couples unsure of their wedding style: “First choose the wedding destination and location you love, and then take your design mood from there.”
His biggest warning? Don’t try to “build palaces by the sea or recreate a jungle in a European palace.” Instead, he urges couples to “be authentic and, instead of following trends, follow your heart’s instinct… be yourself!”
His approach to blooms is refreshingly spontaneous. “I love that blooms are seasonal and that the same flowers aren’t always available,” he says. “That motivates me to choose a favorite each wedding season and use it until I’m tired and then let it rest.”
He even finds joy in last-minute changes: “You leave with an idea of what flower you want, then you go shopping and it’s not available, and you have to choose a new Queen.” He smiles. “That’s part of the magic.”
Reflecting on his journey, Alejandro offers heartfelt advice to his younger self: “Trust in God and your heart, because you will make it.”
He pauses, then adds, “There is no happier place in the world for my heart than being inside Día Uno Floral Studio.”
In Alejandro Salas’s world, every bloom tells a story, every wedding is a chapter of love, and every arrangement is a poem made of petals. At Día Uno, floral design is not just a job—it’s a soulful art form that begins with emotion, embraces nature, and honors the most important day in a couple’s life.
“It’s an honor to use life, because every flower and every plant is a living being that deserves honor.”
