“Flowers have a really strong connection with memory as they are multisensory — smell, sight, touch — and weaving those memories throughout your wedding day makes it so much more special.”

In the rolling landscapes of New South Wales, Australia, Ash—the creative force behind Film and Foliage—has carved out a niche where nature, emotion, and art intersect. Known for her sculptural, organic floral work, Ash doesn't just design with flowers—she tells stories with them. Her philosophy? To honour the wild and imperfect beauty of nature while curating immersive, emotive wedding environments that feel deeply personal.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Ash to uncover the soulful narrative behind her designs, the unforgettable places her art has taken her, and why the return of foliage is quietly redefining the wedding floral scene.

A Journey Rooted in Storytelling

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how your floral journey began?

“I’m Ash, founder and lead designer at Film and Foliage, a floral design studio based in NSW, Australia. My journey into floristry began with a deep love for artful storytelling and a desire to create immersive, emotive wedding experiences through flowers. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a studio known for sculptural, organic floral work that honours the landscape and elevates each couple’s vision.”

Her path wasn’t paved with petals from the start. It was a deep appreciation for narrative, nature, and memory that sparked the idea of floristry as more than decoration—but as a medium for human connection.

Flowers as Emotion, Memory, and Meaning

When asked what fuels her passion most, Ash doesn’t hesitate:

“Incorporating those special, sentimental florals that remind people of their loved ones or special moments in their life.”

She believes florals are far more than a visual element—they are a multi-sensory experience. And it’s that emotional resonance that defines her work. Whether it's including a bloom from a grandmother’s garden or designing an entire installation around a couple’s love of native landscapes, Ash’s artistry runs deep with purpose.

A Private Island, Tree Orchids, and Turtle Hatchlings

Every floral designer has a story that stays with them forever. For Ash, it came far from home.

“Being flown to a private island in Borneo to flower for a wedding. We foraged for delicate tree orchids and watched endangered turtles hatching while creating blooms for our couple.”

It was one of those moments where nature and creativity aligned so perfectly that it felt like a living dream. For Ash, this wasn’t just a beautiful location—it was a sacred space where artistry, ecology, and love merged in a way words can barely capture.

The Power of Non-Traditional Elements

Ash is not afraid to break from tradition—but always with intention.

“I love creativity with intention — not just for novelty or trying to be different for the sake of it. Ensure there is a narrative and meaning behind the styling elements and it will create an amazing visual experience.”

Whether it’s using sculptural branches, foraged textures, or asymmetrical forms, her designs tell a cohesive story. For her, uniqueness should enhance meaning—not distract from it.

The Return of the Green

As we spoke about trends in wedding florals, one unexpected hero emerged: foliage.

“The return of statement foliage — it's not just a filler but a whole moment. I am so ready for green to be back in the wedding scene.”

Foliage, in Ash’s hands, becomes sculpture. Movement. Mood. A way to bring the rawness of the natural world into curated celebration spaces, without losing authenticity.

Embracing Imperfection

When it comes to floral preference, Ash leans into nature’s quirks.

“Anything with a bendy stem or a freckle — I love the imperfections of natural blooms.”

That sentiment echoes throughout her designs. Nothing rigid. Nothing forced. Her work flows like the landscape it honors—wild, emotional, and undeniably real.

For Couples Just Beginning Their Floral Journey

Ash offers this advice to engaged couples unsure of their floral direction:

“The artist is just as important as the service — find people who you click with and will make your wedding day feel amazing and stress-free.”

It’s not just about the flowers. It’s about the energy your vendors bring into your day. Choose those who understand your vision—and elevate it.

Advice to Her Younger Self

Looking back, Ash shares the one piece of advice she would offer to her younger, less-experienced self:

“Experiment as much as possible.”

That sense of play and curiosity continues to define her work, even now. It’s this spirit of exploration that allows Film and Foliage to stay on the cutting edge of emotion-driven, nature-inspired floral design.

A Final Word from Ash

Ash’s work at Film and Foliage isn’t about trends—it’s about timelessness. Emotion. Earth. Art. And most of all, intention. With every stem she selects, every installation she sculpts, she invites couples to see florals not just as ornamentation—but as legacy.

If you're dreaming of wedding flowers that do more than look beautiful—if you want them to speak, to breathe, and to carry your story—Film and Foliage may just be your perfect match.
