"It all started as a hobby 20 years ago when I attended photography school," Alex Paul reminisces. The classrooms of this school became the crucible where Paul's raw talent was first shaped. As he speaks about his early days, one can almost picture the young Paul, eyes wide with wonder, absorbing every technique and trick shared by his instructors. "After realizing I'm good at capturing moments and directing people, I became a second photographer for an established local wedding photographer," he explains. This apprenticeship, lasting two years, was crucial in honing his skills and building his confidence.

The transition from assistant to professional wasn't immediate. Paul describes the process with a hint of nostalgia in his voice: "It took me two years to get enough of confidence to start my own business." One can imagine the sleepless nights, the careful planning, and the leap of faith it took to strike out on his own.

"The majority of my business back then was destination weddings in Italy," Paul reveals. Picture sun-drenched Tuscan hills, ancient Roman ruins, and elegant villas serving as backdrops to Paul's early professional work. These experiences not only sharpened his skills but also broadened his cultural perspective.

Life took another turn for Paul in 2016. "After moving and setting up my family in Cape Cod in 2016, I established myself as a Boston and MA wedding photographer," he states matter-of-factly. The shift from the warm climes of Italy to the historic charm of New England brought new challenges and opportunities.

The Art and Science of Wedding Photography

When asked about his photography style, Paul's response is brief yet revealing: "combination of photojournalism and wedding portraits." This blend allows him to capture both spontaneous, candid moments and carefully composed formal shots.

Paul's toolkit is as diverse as his style. "I use all equipment possible: digital and film cameras, a variety of lenses, and drones," he elaborates. The mechanical precision of a high-end digital camera in one hand, the nostalgic charm of a film camera in the other, and a drone buzzing overhead – Paul leverages every tool to tell a complete visual story.

In the digital darkroom, Paul's approach is one of restraint and respect for natural beauty. "All it needs is to make my client's skin look great, and the colors are accurate and natural," he says of his post-processing work. This philosophy speaks volumes about his integrity as a photographer and his commitment to authenticity.

The Heart of the Matter

For Paul, photography isn't just a job; it's a calling. When asked what he enjoys most about being a photographer, his response is deeply thoughtful: "the realization that my photography will be visual heritage for many many years." This sentiment reveals a profound understanding of the weight of his responsibility and the lasting impact of his work.

Paul's approach to client relationships is as meticulous as his photography. "I want to ensure before the wedding which of my photos and galleries resonates with them the most. Some couples love to pose, some don't, so I ask them in my questionnaire about it!" he explains. This level of customization ensures that each couple receives a tailored experience that aligns with their vision and comfort level.

The Business of Love

While Paul's work is driven by passion, he's also a savvy businessman. He limits himself to 40 weddings per year, ensuring he can give each event the attention it deserves. His pricing reflects his experience and quality, with a minimum starting price of $9000 for 10 hours of coverage.

Paul's experience has given him unique insights into how couples can prepare for their photo shoots. His advice is practical and charming: "Stand in front of full a body-size mirror, and practice the formal pose you like the most."

While New England is now his home base, Paul hasn't lost his love for destination weddings. "Yes, a few every year. Tuscany is my place," he says when asked about photographing weddings abroad.
